Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) for Erectile Dysfunction and Peyronies, including GAINSwave

February 11, 2021
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive method of treating both erectile dysfunction and Peyronie's disease. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection, while Peyronie’s disease causes painful erections, curvature/deviation of the penis, and sexual dysfunction, including ED. ESWT treats these conditions by administering low-level shock waves that can break up plaque buildup in the penis and stimulate the growth of new blood vessels. At Med Studio, we use the GAINSWave Technique, a method of administering ESWT that goes above and beyond traditional methods of ESWT. Traditionally, most men found that their providers would prescribe medicines like Viagra for ED that could induce erections within a certain timeframe. The problem with this is straightforward—sex becomes somewhat clinical because it has to be planned out. No longer can sex be a natural, spontaneous act, but rather something that feels like a chore—which it never should. Another problem with this type of treatment is that it only treats the symptoms—the inability to achieve or maintain an erection—and doesn’t treat the root cause. ESWT and the GAINSWave Technique focus on the root physical causes of ED—the blood vessels aren’t doing what they’re supposed to do. This is often caused by plaque, the same kind of plaque that accumulates throughout your cardiovascular system as a result of age and diet. By breaking up plaque and stimulating new blood vessels to grow, the physical causes of ED can be overcome. For Peyronie’s disease, ESWT similarly treats the root causes. Peyronie’s disease is a buildup of scar tissue that can be caused by a number of factors, including repeated damage to the penis from sexual or athletic activity, or a family history of Peyronie’s disease. Breaking up scar tissue is the main goal of many of the available therapies for treating Peyronie’s disease. There are certain medications, like Collagenase and Interferon, that may help. Other therapies include traction therapy (pulling on the penis) and surgery. Many men want to avoid taking medications, having invasive surgeries, or experiencing painful procedures. ESWT is a non-invasive method that has proven clinical results. It can help to break up scar tissue and allow the penis to naturally return to its normal shape. The study referenced above found that pain levels decreased, curvature decreased, and length during erection increased following ESWT. ESWT isn’t just for men who have Peyronie’s disease. For men who want to prevent Peyronie’s or who want to maximize their sexual potential (a term called “biohacking”), ESWT also has many benefits.
