What is a PRP Injection?
PRP is an abbreviation for platelet-rich plasma. PRP is extracted from your blood after being drawn from your body – just like a standard blood draw. PRP is becoming extremely popular in the cosmetic surgery world, as it is a completely natural replacement for other cosmetic procedures with synthetic materials. The healing process for these cosmetic procedures is greatly increased because of the increase in growth hormones released. PRP injections may reduce the need for medications or even surgery, depending on the issue being treated as well as other considerations based on the patient and their history. It is estimated that 50 million men and 30 million women in the United States suffer from male or female pattern baldness. While this can start to show at any stage in life due to genetics, medical history and other factors, most begin to experience it naturally after the age of 50.
What are platelets?
The blood is made up several types of blood cells. The three main types are: red blood cells, which are important for carrying oxygen throughout our body; white blood cells, which are necessary to fight off infections; and platelets, which are responsible for our body’s healing process. For example, when you cut your finger, the blood that rushes to the open wound contains platelets, which is ultimately responsible for clotting and stopping the flow of blood from leaving your body. Platelets release enzymes which help to create the protective scab that forms, allowing your skin to regenerate and heal with as little scarring as possible.
What is the process?
We start out by drawing a few vials of your blood, the same process completed when you’re getting a standard blood test performed. We use specially designed vials that are meant to extract the proper nutrients needed for the procedure then the tubes are placed into a centrifuge. Centrifuging will separate the blood’s platelets and a few other essential elements to the surface for easy extraction.
Once injections are prepared, the platelets are strategically injected into the area that requires treatment. For hair loss treatment, PRP injections are typically administered several times over the period of a few months, tapering off to less frequent follow up sessions over the course of several months to 2 years. This offers the best and most reliable results for those seeking a natural hair loss solution. Depending on the patient history, the best schedule for your desired outcome will be recommended.
Most patients do not experience pain during this procedure. The option of local anesthesia is offered for those that may feel less comfortable with the procedure.
Although this is a non-invasive procedure, some patients are typically recommended to avoid some activities for several days in order to assist in the healing process and to allow the PRP injection to fully perform.
How does it work?
One of the most beneficial reasons to use PRP Injection as a therapy is that it uses completely natural substances from your own body to achieve results, decreasing any risks of an allergic reaction or harmful side effects.
PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, contains human growth factors which stimulate and promote hair growth in a natural and reliable way. It can be used on its own, or in combination and complimentary with other hair transplant or restoration surgeries and therapies.
There are several different growth factors in PRP, however those that stimulate and encourage hair growth work together in promoting blood vessel formation and growth, blood cell growth and promoting the growth of matrix between cells, all important aspects of hair growth and rejuvenation.
Benefits for both men and women who have been successfully treated with PRP injections include:
- Regrowth of hair
- Strengthening of hair
- Greater volume and thickness
- Safe and natural looking results
